What is an NTEE code?

NTEE codes are a classification system used by the IRS to categorize nonprofit organizations according to their purpose or the services they provide. Groundswell has mapped each nonprofit's NTEE code to one of Groundswell's 12 issue areas.

Some nonprofits - such as churches - may not have an NTEE code because they are not required to register with the IRS as a tax-exempt organization. Other nonprofits with less than $5,000 in annual gross receipts are also not required to file for tax-exempt status. Finally, some nonprofits may not have an NTEE code because they are new and have not yet been classified by the IRS.
